Our Favorite Ways to Handle Election Day Stress.
Stress eating is an emotional and biological response to a real, or perceived, threat. Your cortisol goes up which makes your appetites go up, and you very quickly find yourself halfway through a bag of Tatte's cookies or Terra potato chips.
But that was the old you. Let's chat about how the new you is going to handle today!
How to Handle Election Day Stress Eating:
- Hydrate: Get all of your favorite drinks out and ready to go: sparkling water. Hot chocolate topped with sugar free whipped cream. Ginger turmeric tea (I love the Trader Joe's brand). Have lots of options ready to go and sip on a liquid first when you start to get snacky.
- Up The Protein: My current favorite high-protein snack is our frozen Greek yogurt chocolate mess: mix cocoa powder and monkfruit sugar into a cup of Greek yogurt and place into the freezer for about 30 minutes. Top with chocolate sauce, pistachio nuts and a few slices of banana. Oh baby, this is soOooOOo good.
- Craving something salty? Grab BBQ curls, Everything Bagel protein pretzels or roast a big batch of carrots and dip in hummus and sesame seeds. Nourish your body rather than trying to deprive yourself.
- Focus on nutrient-dense, filling foods: More is more. I'm planning to make a HUGE strawberry protein smoothie: frozen strawberries, Diata vanilla shake, vanilla almond milk, spinach and flax seed. You can't even taste the spinach and this truly taste divine...and did I mention it's huge?
- Move your body: Movement is the best antidote to stress. Take a little walk outside, take a deep breath and remember the blessings we all have in our lives right now.
We're here to help you heal your relationship with food and nourish your body — especially during moments that are particularly stressful. Remember, we're not striving for perfection. We're looking for progress. Treat yourself well tonight and your body and mind will thank you tomorrow.
